For anyone wondering, no, that's not a song title.
My knowledge of song titles being limited and my patience with lyrics search sites being even more limited, I'm afraid my loyal readers will have to put up with whatever title my brain cell can invent from here on. (Except for today, obviously, as I've nicked this title from John Keats. As he's dead, I thought he probably wouldn't mind...)
Autumn is here, and for some reason that wakes up my baking mojo. Probably because sticking your head in the oven to see if a cake is cooked is not something you do when the sun is shining. Also because there's nothing like a mug of hot chocolate and a homemade biscuit on a chilly day. Yummers!
So, to bring you up to date with my baking endeavours....
A couple of weeks ago, our friend Myriam celebrated her birthday. Any excuse to launch myself at a Nigella "Devil's Food Cake", which is a chocolatey mountain of extreme joy.
My icing technique is a little rusty, but the cake was delicious!
Who would have thought that you could make Ginger Nuts at home? Not me, until a Linda Collister book gave me the idea. The recipe called for golden syrup, of which I currently have very little, so I substituted black treacle, of which I have rather more. Turned out to be a good move. These were fantastic!
I always knew that I would one day discover the benefit of having inherited my Dad's enormous hands gene. They're GREAT for making cookies! This was a recipe sent to me by penpal Elizabeth on the lid of a Quaker oats tub. It took me ages to translate the measurements from American into grams, but it was well worth it.
These "Vanishing Oat Cookies" were something between a cookie and a flapjack and were absolutely wonderful. Thanks Elizabeth!

I'm impressed by your icing - don't know if you would have seen it but they made sacher tortes on The Great British Bake Off, and their icing writing was terrible! Also, I'm very impressed you managed to take a picture of your own hands, you must have three hands to be able to do that! :)
Aw, thanks! I don't watch Bake Off - perhaps I should have! I'm intending to hone my icing skills, but it means making LOTS more cakes!!!
Would you believe me if I said that Athos took the photo of my hands?
I agree with Carrie, your icing looks fabulous. Kudos for the excuse of making more cakes btw ;-).
I have been making sushi with far less success than your baking. Sadly they look more like swiss rolls than sushi :-(.
I'll stick to cakes, I think. Raw fish has always struck me as a suitable meal for an otter, but not for a person!
Although when making fiddly things, I find it usually helps to put in far less filling than you think it needs and then it usually comes out all right. Bonne chance!
The cake looks divine!
I just came back from trick-or-treating with Louis-Justin and I did eat a few of his chocolate bars after he went to bed... Do you think that I'm a horrible mom?!
You are a selfless and devoted mother, who is prepared to sacrifice her own hip measurement to protect her son's teeth.
Now if that isn't a GREAT excuse for stealing your child's Hallowe'en chocolate, I don't know what is!!!
Bisous!
Awww, you sure know how to make me feel better, mon amie!
I loooooooooooove sushi (would now do an otter impersonation if knew what one was ). You are right about the filling, it just never looks enough ;-)
Not sure about how to impersonate an otter....ingesting raw fish with gusto might do it!
On the filling question, I speak (or, rather, type)from experience. When making "one bite samosas", if your coffee spoon of filling is even rounded, never mind heaped, you can't fold the little buggers into triangles. The ridiculous thing is, they always taste great, even though your brain tells you there's not enough filling in them!
